A depleted EDG Property Solihull Barons went down to defeat at the Sheffield Scimitars on Sunday evening but retained second place in the standings after closest rivals the Deeside Dragons failed to pick up points over the weekend.

The Barons lined up missing the injured Daniel Mulcahy and the suspended Phil Mulcahy, Filip Byfält and Graham Laverick. Ben Lee stepped up as netminder while Coventry NIHL Blaze goalie Joel Bearman was brought in as back-up goalie.

With Barons lines hastily rejigged from the previous evenings set-up, the Scimitars were able to exploit the unfamiliarity in the Solihull partnerships and two quick Sheffield goals around the five minute mark from Fritz Heinzle and Tyler Nixon gave the home side a margin the visiting Barons could not close. Richard Crowe would counter for the Barons at around the ten minute mark but by the end of the first period the Scimitars had restored their two goal advantage via a goal from teenage forward Jacob Brammer.

The middle period saw the Scimitars Michael Danecko pull a further goal out for Sheffield before Alex Whyte and Niklas Ottosson each netted to bring the Barons back into touching distance.

The ever consistent Nicholas Winters covers the puck from Charlie Webb (J&K Davies)

Sadly that was as good as it got for the Barons as they would not score in the third while the Scimitars shut things down with two further goals, one each from Heinzle and Brammer.

The Barons must now regroup ahead of this weekend’s cup semi-final double-header against Blackburn. On Saturday they head to the Hawks with deciding leg back at Hobs Moat on Sunday. Face-off : 5.30pm. See you there!!!
