Defenceman Phil Lee commenced his senior ice hockey career with Billingham Bombers at the age of 16 after playing junior hockey for only 2 years. Phil was soon noticed and was selected for the GB Under 18 squad and later the GB Under 20 squad before making the move to Solihull Barons in 1986, where he became something of a legend, and almost a piece of the furniture!

Playing in the Benson and Hedges League, Phil was often referred to as “the third import” and soon gained a reputation for being one of the finest British Defencemen of the time, this quantified later with selection for the GB Senior team, not once but twice to add to his resume. Phil was also known for his signature “hip check” whereby he would catch out any unsuspecting forwards that were heading his way.

After a move to Sheffield Steelers for two seasons in the early nineties, Phil returned to Solihull due to work commitments where he saw out his ice hockey career with the exception of a season at Romford Raiders, with him finally hanging his skates up in 2014 aged 49!

Phil played a total of 17 seasons at Solihull Barons, totalling 457 games played in a Barons shirt, a record that remains unbeaten.

2022 saw Phil return to the club, this time as Head Coach after having taken some time out to focus on family life with his wife and two sons.

Phil is never far away from the ice rink these days and is also involved in the junior Learn to Play initiative where he is happy to pass on his skills to eager youngsters keen to take up the sport.
