Recap

EDG Property Solihull Barons : 5
Widnes Wild : 3

The EDG Property Solihull Barons continued their strong run of performances on home ice with a solid win over the Widnes Wild on Saturday evening. This was despite a never-give-up effort from a very short benched Wild who rocked the Barons early by taking the first period with two unanswered goals.

Sam Chandler (J&K Davies)

The Wild got the scoring underway in the sixth minute as pressure around the Solihull net left Laverick with too many options to cover and Jonathan Williamson tapped in through the five hole from a metre out. Three minutes later and Widnes doubled their lead, a break up the ice and Mikey Gilbert fired into the top left of the Solihull net.

Three minutes into the second and the Barons pulled a goal back, Niklas Ottosson sliding his way through on goal and finding the space to send the puck into the Widnes net. Following a period of Wild pressure it would be Ottosson once more who would level things up for the Barons just after 11 minutes, a free flowing play saw him curve left toward the Widnes net before picking his target and firing the puck back-handed beyond Luca Tessadri in the Wild net. The Barons would level up in the 24th minute in the final second of a powerplay – Phil Mulcahy getting his name on the scoreboard this time. With four minutes of the second left the Barons began to ease away, Daniel Mulcahy on the back post off of a cross goalmouth feed from Niklas Ottosson.

The final period looked to be playing out scoreless as the Wild’s offense largely petered out and while the Barons were largely in control there was little the Solihull offence could do to get the better of the visitors. It would fall to the Wild to get the first final period out with only 6 minutes to go Justin Dennison with the score to cut the Solihull lead to a single goal. The visitors hopes were however short lived and within two minutes Dan Mulcahy pulled out the two goal margin again with a sweet shot from the left hand circle to seal the win for Solihull.
