Recap
EDG Property Solihull Barons : 4
Whitley Warriors : 1
The EDG Property Solihull Barons earned, yet another home win with defeat of the Whitley Warriors on Sunday evening by a scoreline which while reflecting a deserved Barons win did not truly reflect the closeness of much of the play.
The first period began with some close and hi-tempo end to end play which would see the Warriors get the opener, a close in effort from Phil Edgar beyond a spread-eagled Graham Laverick after nine minutes. The Barons quickly equalised through another rapid Jacob Race breakaway and classy conversion.
By 11 minutes into the middle period the Barons found themselves on a 5 on 3 powerplay and within a few seconds of the puck drop Richard Crowe converted the Barons second goal with a shot from the left hand circle which went beyond Dean Bowater and into the roof of the Whitley net. Despite the remainder of the period being played with one side or the other playing short-handed, there would be no further scoring and the Barons carried a single goal lead into the final twenty.
Five minutes into the third and the Barons, earned themselves goal number 3 as Max Soden found the time to carefully spot the space round Dean Bowater and fire home. With the score unchanged as the game ticked down the Warriors pulled Bowater with three minutes to go and while their six men ensured most of this final spell was spent in the Barons end, when Alex Whyte had the puck sent his way by Niklas Ottosson, the resulting empty net goal sealed the home win.
Next weekend will be a busy one for the Barons with a pair of tricky ties. On Saturday they travel to Hull to take on the Jets before coming home to Hobs Moat for Sunday’s tie against league leaders the Billingham Stars. Face off 5.30pm, Sunday 18th Feb.
