(Barons go through to finals weekend 12-6 on aggregate)

The EDG Property Solihull Barons on Sunday secured their play-off finals ticket with a comfortable aggregate win over the Widnes Wild following both legs of this past weekend’s play-off quarter finals. While the ultimate scoreline gave the Barons a strong win, the Wild caused some early scares coming close to overcoming Solihull’s first leg advantage.

While the Barons headed in to Sunday’s decider with a 3 goal advantage following Saturday’s 5-2 win in Widnes, by 5 minutes into the first period the Wild had eaten into the Solihull advantage. A pair of early Kyle Carruth goals with in 30 seconds of each other to cut the Wild’s aggregate deficit to a single goal.

Into the second and the Wild had drawn level overall as Joey Coulter netted just before the half hour mark. By this time though Logan Reid in the Wild net was starting to see a lot more rubber coming his way. Niklas Ottosson soothed home nerves with a couple of quick goals just after the half hour mark, an even handed goal followed by a penalty shot. By the end of the second Solihull had started to ease away as Jordan Jolly and Filip Byfält both netted for the Barons.

By the final period the Barons had more or less put the game to bed with further goals from Alex Whyte and Ottosson to ensure a trip to Sheffield this weekend.

In the other quarter-finals, results generally went with the higher seed with both Billingham and Blackburn coming through the draw. The 5th seeded Whitley Warriors edged out the 4th seeded Deeside Dragons to clinch the final Sheffield spot. The Barons will play the Hawks in the 8pm semi-final 2, while a tasty Tyne-Tees derby featuring the Stars and Warriors in the first semi-final.
