(after overtime)

The Zoo Accounting Solihull Barons rounded off a weekend of home games with an overtime win in a tie against the Widnes Wild which ebbed and flowed and fully entertained over its entire 64 minute duration.

Matt Maurice (S Crampton)

The Barons were quickest to get a mark on the scoresheet with Dan Mulcahy netting after little over 30 seconds of the puck drop. By three minutes in the Barons had doubled the lead, Niklas Ottosson with a lovely effort this time. Matt Maurice joined the scoring party a little beyond the mid-period mark and to the casual viewer it looked like the Barons were starting to run away with things.

The Wild had other ideas and two minutes later opened their account thanks to a Nathan Britton effort and then a pair of goals by Richard Haggar and Rhys Edwards within twenty seconds of each other brought the two sides level by the close of a high paced first period.

Double threat for the Wilds Miles Finney (S Crampton)

The second period showed a little slackening of the pace but still some scoring, the Wilds Dani Haid converting first to push the visitors into the lead for the first time of the night before Phil Mulcahy balanced things out mid-period. Richard Haggar then, in what would be his last goal before departing the Wild this week, put the Barons on the back foot with a 39th minute go-ahead goal.

Was that the winner then ? (S Crampton)

Matt Maurice levelled for Solihull in the sixth minute of the final regular period to bring things even once more and with no further scoring overtime was called for. With overtime normally played 3 on 3, the Barons were fortunate to pick up consecutive powerplays so affording a fourth player on the ice and giving a little more chance for the Barons Phil Mulcahy to earn the winner.

Celebration time! (S Crampton)

The Barons are away at Nottingham next Sunday and will not be back on home ice until the 12th of February when we welcome the Whitley Warriors to Hobs Moat for the final time in the 2022-23 Moralee season. Face-off 5.30pm.
