Recap
EDG Property Solihull Barons : 5
Hull Jets : 3
The EDG Property Solihull Barons bounced back from the previous night’s disappointment in Billingham with an assured victory against the Hull Jets on Sunday evening and while it was a strong team effort, four goal hero Matt Maurice and solid goaltending from Ben Lee were particularly noteworthy.
Solihull’s Matt Maurice opened his account after 5 minutes and 40 second with a breakway up the ice pursued by the Hull D before deking the Jet’s goalie for a sweet opener. Within little over a minute Maurice had doubled both his and Solihull’s tally with a close in shot on the powerplay. The remainder of the first 20 would see no further scoring but saw Niklas Ottosson head to the dressing room early after getting caught awkwardly by a Hull shot. Fortunately he would return to play later in the game.
After 8 minutes of the second period Hull team scored their opener, Kieran Beech being first to get the puck in the net for the visitors.. After 12 minutes Matt Maurice got his hatrick and once more eased out Solihull’s lead to 2, followed a minute later by his fourth. By period end Hull’s Alex Kerr countered, scoring on the powerplay off of a shot from left circle on second period to keep the Yorkshire side in touch with the Barons.
The final period would see the two sides trade a single goal apiece. Early in the third and Niklas Ottosson slotted home short handed off of an offensive zone face-off to add a goal to his tally of 3 assists. With two minutes to go Hull added their third via Richard Haggar to conclude the scoring for the evening.
The Barons have only one game next weekend as they take the long trip to Northumbria to take on the Whitley Warriors. They then play their last games before Christmas the following weekend as they head first to Nottingham on the Saturday to take on the Lions, a fixture scheduled early at 1.20pm and on the big arena ice. This will be followed by a tie back home on the Sunday evening against the Sheffield Scimitars on Sunday 17th December at 5.30pm. This game will include a free after game skate with the Barons – more details to follow soon!
