Recap
Zoo Accounting Solihull Barons : 1
Solway Sharks : 8
The Zoo Accounting Solihull Barons had perhaps a night to forget on Sunday evening as a slick and well drilled Solway Sharks showed why they are a continuous fixture at the top end of the Moralee table.
Despite an early Barons powerplay it was the Sharks who were first to get the scorekeepers pen flowing with a cross to the right from Connor Henderson which was tapped in by Peter Gapa on Sam Hewitt’s exposed far side post. Three minutes later and the Barons found themselves two down as Gapa again found the net off of some quick conversion play. The Sharks gave themselves a chance to go 3-nil up with an 11 minute penalty shot but the parried puck kept the Solway score down to two going into the first period break.
Three minutes into the second and the Sharks got that third goal as a turnover just outside the Barons zone put Solway on the front foot and pressurising the Barons goal – Ruairi Lockerbie getting the conversion. Two minutes later and the Sharks powerplay line kept the Barons PK on a string before an opening emerged and Scott Henderson fired home for the visitor’s fourth of the night. This seemed to give the Barons a bit of a jolt with more balanced play in the middle and second half of the second and when a powerplay arrived in the tenth minute Phil Mulcahy got Solihull into the game with a deflected shot from close in.
Any hopes of a Barons comeback in the third were however quickly dampened with three quick Solway goals early in the final period, Connor Henderson, Scott Henderson and Jonathan McBean doing the damage. By the end of the tie the Sharks added an eigth with a Lewis Young goal.
The Barons are back on home ice this weekend when they welcome the Sheffield Scimitars to Hobs Moat. This will be the Scimitars second and final regular season visit to the Barons, the Yorkshire side having been Solihull’s first home opposition back in September. The Barons convincingly defeated the Scimitars that time out and will be hoping for more of the same on Sunday.
