The Direct Taxis Solihull Barons earned a point in a hard fought game in Dumfries against league leading Solway Sharks on Saturday evening.

The puck had barely dropped before the Sharks got the opening goal – import, Peter Gapa finding the net for a delayed penalty goal within the first minute. The Barons would strike back quickly however as Phil Mulcahy fired home with just under two minutes on the clock. Five minutes later and Mulcahy would get his second via support from Andy Whitehouse to push Solihull into the lead.

The Barons lead would hold to the middle of the second period when the Sharks Scott Henderson capitalised on a powerplay chance to draw Solway level. Two minutes later and the same player would head to the penalty bench alongside the Barons Callum Bowley for some handbags. By the end of the middle twenty the two sides would have traded a goal each, Struan Tonner for the Sharks and Bowley for the Barons, with a 3-3 scoreline and everything to play for in the 3rd.

Gapa pulled the Sharks a goal ahead early in the third but then the home side would run into penalty trouble and Tom Soar exploited this to level the sides 4-4. The remainder of regulation time was scoreless and the game was pushed to overtime.

With just over a minute of overtime gone Christian Johnson bit for the Sharks and slotted the winner past Graham Laverick to give the Sharks 2 points. The Barons, while disappointed not to have sneaked the win themselves still picked up a point from the tie which may prove crucial come the end of season play-off ties.
