Solihull Barons starlets Sam Hewitt and Richard Slater have been called up to trials for the Team GB University side in preparation for the 2013 FISU World Winter Games.

The trials are being held on Friday at the Ice Sheffield Arena for young British hopefuls and will feature players from the Elite League and Premier League as well as the ENL.

The 26th Winter Universiade Championships will be taking place in Maribor, Slovenia in 2013 and the competition is billed as second in importance only to the Winter Olympic Games.

The team itself is coached by Matt Bradbury and Mike Urquhart and will play a number of games against EPL and Elite League sides over the course of the next two years prior to the Championships.

Netminder Hewitt is excited by the prospect and enhanced training that the trials will bring and is relishing the test that they will present.
“I am pretty excited about the trials.” Said Hewitt.
“It will be a good opportunity to play with better players and test myself at a higher level.

“Obviously we don’t have proper goalie coaches here (Barons), but there will be proper coaches there so it will give me the chance to learn stuff that I’ve never learnt before and maybe when I come back it will have helped me improve.”

Hewitt admitted that he has always dreamt of representing GB, but insisted that it’ll be tough to be chosen from the pack, but believes he has a good a chance as anyone.

“Obviously it is a dream for anyone to play for GB, but it was always a dream for me to play for the Barons and when that became a reality it was one of the best feelings I’ve ever had, so hopefully I can do well on Friday.”

“I’d like to think I’ll do well. There will be a better level of training and I’ll be facing shots from a better standard of player, so maybe I’ll do well and get put through, we’ll have to wait and see.”
