The Lookers of Yardley Solihull Barons notched up another successful weekend with two big wins to confirm their position at the play-offs and also to complete their record of dishing out defeats on Solihull ice to every team in the league.
On Saturday the Barons headed to Sheffield to take on the Sheffield Senators for the second time in the space of a week and while the earlier fixture had resulted in the Barons bringing home an easy win, this tie was not so straightforward.
While the Barons dominated much of the early play, their efforts were time and time again thwarted by Mark Hartley in the Senators net. By contrast the Sheffield opportunities were few but when the chance came on 18 minutes the home side made the most of it to take a lead which they would hold onto for the remainder of the period.
Following the restart the Barons would quickly move onto the front foot with two goals in 10 seconds from Josh Bruce and Tom Soar a minute in. Again the Barons would hold the balance of play but by period end the Senators had once more drawn level leaving it all to play for in the final twenty minutes.
Again the Barons emerged from the dressing rooms with a point to prove and got three quick goals from Niklas Ottosson, Tom Soar and Tomas Janak to put some clear water between the sides and while the teams would each trade a pair of goals with ten minutes to go, the Barons had done enough for the win.
On Sunday second placed Whitley Warriors set their sat navs for the Solihull rink and despite the long journey started their game against the Barons much the brighter. Despite this, it was Solihull who scored first, Tomas Janak feeding Joe Henry a long pass to give breakaway chance for the number 7, which was duly converted into the opening goal of the evening. The lead would however be short lived with the Warriors firing in from the point off of a face-off less than a minute later. By the latter half of the period the Barons were coming much more into the game and again took the lead, this time through Stephen Heape play down the left wing.
Into the second period and the Warriors David Longstaff levelled things up with a close range shot. The pace had upped significantly and some strong, physical hockey was on offer which bore fruit for the Barons in the 35th minute, Niklas Ottosson this time. The period would however end with the sides back level as Whitley's Ben Richards tipped in to leave things 3-3 going into the final twenty minutes.
Shortly after the restart it was the Warriors who took the lead, Harry Harley breaking away for a short-handed goal. The Barons however kept their focus with goals from Ed Eaton, Josh Bruce and Rob Eley to ultimately give Solihull a hard won team victory. |
The Barons have no games this weekend before they wind up their regular season with clashes with champions elect the Blackburn Hawks in Lancashire on Saturday 26th March before closing the league campaign at home on Sunday 27th when they take on the Sheffield Spartans, face-off 6:00pm.

NEXT HOME GAME
SUNDAY 27th March

The Barons final home game of the regular season is against the Sheffield Spartans.
The Spartans look likely to end the season at the wrong end of the table as far as the Sheffield side is concerned.
While the points may not be an issue both sides have big post season games coming up - for the Barons it is the play-offs while the Spartans face relegation ties against the Widnes Wild.
Neither side therefore can afford to go into the post season on the back of anything other than a win.
Make it loud and ensure the Barons have that extra man on the ice ! |
