Lookers of Yardley Solihull Barons : 3
Solway Sharks : 1

The Lookers of Yardley Solihull Barons further solidified their third place in the English Ice Hockey Association Moralee divison with a ground out victory over the Solway Sharks.

The Barons would open the scoring on six minutes, Josh Bruce making a short handed breakaway to pass the puck to Joe Henry to slot home just as Solihull returned to full strength. The Barons would extend their lead further, Josh Bruce finding the net himself with a lofted shot which passed through the Solway netminder's grasp. By period end the Sharks had started to find form and pressure the Solihull net but it was Solihull who headed to the dressing rooms 2-0 to the good.

The second period would be tightly contested but a strong performance by the Barons defence back-stopped by Sam Hewitt kept the Sharks in check while the Barons own offensive chances were limited by playing much of the period under penalty kill conditions.

The final period would begin in style for the Barons; Niklas Ottosson tickling the puck from a foot out, placing it over Shark's netminder Kieran Hobbins stick for Solihull goal number three. With five minutes to go the Sharks would pull back a goal with a blistering long range shot to spoil Sam Hewit's clean sheet but this would prove too little, too late for the Scottish visitors. The remainder of the period descended into a series of scuffles, the Sharks frustrated by their lack of success on goal and the Barons perhaps frustrated by some debatable refereeing decisions. It would however be the home side who would take home the two points.

The Barons have next weekend off before welcoming the Telford Tigers to Solihull on Sunday 21st February for what will be a crucial game as both sides aims to make the play-offs. Face-off : 6:00 pm.

News on the End of Season Playoffs
Below are the answers to some questions that I am sure you have about the playoff weekend on 9th and 10th April :

Q. What teams are at the playoff weekend?
A. The top 4 teams in our league (Moralee) and the top 4 teams in the Laidler league (The league that the Barons won the last 2 seasons).

Q. Will the Barons make the playoffs?
A. Currently, the Barons are 3rd in the league, so we hope so. This league is very competitive - it looks like Blackburn and Whitley Bay will take the first two spots with Solway, Billingham and Telford battling Solihull for one of the remaining two playoff spots.

Q. Where are the playoffs this year?
A. At Ice Sheffield. Solihull and Solway have held the playoffs for the last seasons for the two leagues. It was agreed that a better format would be to have both the playoffs held at the same venue over the one weekend. Ice Sheffield is the best venue to host this.

Q. How do I get a ticket?
A. During February, 100 tickets have been allocated to each of the 17 teams in the two leagues (Ice Sheffield holds 1500). You can pay for them (if there are any left) , at the Telford game on 21st February.
From 1st March, tickets go on public sale via Ice Sheffield box office

Q. How much are the tickets?
A. £30 for an adult that covers all games (both leagues); £15 for U16s

Q. If I buy a ticket, and the Barons do not make the playoffs, can I get a refund on my ticket?
A. No. However, it is expected that the event will be sold out, so there may be a way to return the ticket but this is not in place at the moment

Q. When will the Barons be playing?
A. This depends on many things:
a. That the Barons reach the playoffs
b. Saturday semi-finals are at 10:30am; 1:30pm; 4:30pm; 7:30pm.
c. The winner of our league will choose which time they want to play the team that finishes 4th in the league. The team finishing second in the league would then choose the slot that they would be playing the team that finishes 3rd. So the Barons could be playing at any of the 4 times on the Saturday. We will know once the league places are finalised
d. On the Sunday, the Moralee final is at 4pm (The Laidler final precedes it at 1pm)
