Barons tame the Wild

Motor Nation Solihull Barons : 14
Widnes Wild : 0

The Motor Nation Solihull Barons continued their strong run of form with an emphatic win over league new boys the Widnes Wild on Sunday night at Hobs Moat Rink.

The game was only two minutes old when Erik Bakalar found Eddie Eaton in space on the centre line, Eaton releasing a rocket as he passed into the offensive zone to open the scoring for the Barons.

The lead was doubled just after the five minute mark, Joe Henry setting up Josh Bruce for a tap in from the back post. Within seconds the Barons had their third, Erik Bakalar pushing the puck over the line after Eddie Eaton's shot had trickled under Stephen Gilmartin, the Wild netminder.

The Barons were five to the good before eight minutes as Josh Bruce and Andy Whitehouse brought up goals four and five for Solihull.

A change of netminder by the Wild steadied things slightly for Widnes, the Barons being held at bay until the dying seconds of the period when Josh Bruce made it the even half dozen off of a feed from Joe Henry.

The second period was scoreless for its first half, the Barons continually threatening the Widnes net, while the visitors might have felt disappointed to have not converted on a few reasonable chances. Again it was Bruce who added to his tally for the night just after the half hour mark, leaping on a loose puck in the Widnes crease for the Barons number 7, while the same player deflected the puck in off a cross from Joe Henry on the extreme left wing for goal 8.

Connor Hubbuck and Rob Eley worked the dirty areas in front of the Widnes net to set the Barons 9-0 up going into the third period.

With the win assured, the Barons might have been forgiven if they had eased back in the final twenty minutes. That however was not to be part of the game plan as Solihull found the net a further five times without loss, Sam Hewitt delivering a confident performance in the Barons net, while Hubbuck with two, Eley, Bakalar and Henry completed the scoring at the other end of the rink.

The Barons face a much sterner test this Sunday when they welcome league leaders the Deeside Dragons to the Solihull rink. Ties against Deeside consistently deliver closely fought, high quality, end to end games so make sure you get down to the rink to support your Barons.

Barons assists : Henry (4), Rogers (3), Bakalar (3), Eaton (2), Eley (2), Janak (2), Lee (2), Selwood, Larkin, Doyle, Papps, Bruce
Barons Man of the Match : Ryan Selwood
