Lookers of Yardley Solihull Barons : 6
Telford NL Tigers : 4
Sunday saw a truly exciting clash at Hobs Moat Ice Rink as the Lookers of Yardley Solihull Barons edged an entertaining hour of hockey with a 6-4 win over Midlands rivals the Telford NL Tigers.
If there were any thoughts that the two sides might start the high stakes game cagely, these were dispelled within a minute of the start as both squads were quick to find the net – Niklas Ottosson scoring for the Barons. By ten minutes in however the Tigers had found the net a further two times to put the Barons down on the scoresheet if not the overall play.
The remainder of the period would see a strong offensive performance from the Barons but despite peppering the Telford net, Denis Bell, the Tigers net minder held things solid for his side.
The second period would see the Barons given a number of powerplay opportunities as the Tigers began to give up penalties. These opportunities would go unconverted but by the final five minutes of the period Solihull had managed to start to find some gaps in the Tigers defence with Ed Eaton, Tomas Janak and Thomas Soar all putting the puck beyond Denis Bell’s claws and in doing so gave the Barons a single goal advantage going into the final twenty minutes.
The Barons would further extend their lead early in the final period, Niklas Ottosson with his second of the evening before the margin was again trimmed back by the ever-resilient Tigers.
By the final minute of the period the Tigers pulled their netminder in favour of a further attacker in the hope of securing a draw and a point but when the puck fell to the Barons with seconds to go the win was inked with a goal into the empty Tigers net.
The Barons have a tough weekend coming up. On Saturday they take the long trip North to Dumfries to take on the Solway Sharks before renewing acquaintances with the Telford Tigers in Telford on Sunday. The Barons next home game is Sunday 15th November when they welcome the Billingham Stars to Solihull for the first time in several years. Face-off 6:00pm.
