Tigers Tamed by Unbeaten Barons

Bristol Street Motors Solihull Barons : 8
Telford NL Tigers : 4

Sunday 5th October 2014

Sunday evening's tie saw the Bristol Street Motors Solihull Barons welcome the Telford NL Tigers, the only other undefeated team in the Laidler division, to Hobs Moat ice for the very first time for what promised to be a highly competitive fixture.

The Barons showed their league leading credentials on the three minute mark as neat interplay between Joe Henry and Josh Bruce saw the former opening the scoring. Within a minute the Barons had doubled the lead, Eddie Eaton sliding the puck behind the Tiger's keeper and into the net. By mid period the Barons had picked up a couple more goals, Josh Bruce from close in for number three, while a short handed breakaway by the same player saw a sprawling Telford netminder unable to parry his final shot.

The Tigers showed their ability to strike back when the opportunity to arose, with a scrambled goal by ex-Baron Karol Jets on 15 minutes.

The Barons restored their lead a minute later, Tomas Janek taking his time from Telford's left hand face-off spot to find the net.

This was quickly countered by Telford, Josh Cosgrove picking up a rebound on Sam Hewitt in the Solihull net for the Tigers second goal. The dying seconds of the first period would see the the Barons end the first twenty on a high, Perry Doyle finding Josh Bruce open, who in turn slotted the puck in the Telford net.

The second period began with a spell of unconverted Telford pressure but it would be the Barons who would find the net first, Niklas Ottosson with a classy rush to put Solihull on seven goals. The Tigers were however still not out of the game and made the most of chances gifted to them. A two. man breakaway on 38 minutes saw the Tigers keep themselves in the game as promising, young forward Macauley Heywood made the most of the chance to keep the Tigers within touching distance going into the final twenty minutes.

The final period was largely one long spell of Barons pressure, but with the finishing touches not quite there and solid Telford netminding, the score stayed as it was until the final five minutes as Eddie Eaton was fed the puck from behind the net by Niklas Ottosson for Solihull goal number eight. A Telford rush with two minutes to go brought the Barons advantage back to four goals, while a penalty shot in the final minute in favour of Barons man of the match Josh Bruce was trapped by Telford netminder and their man of the match Denis Bell to settle things 8-4 to the Barons.

The Barons are back on home ice this Sunday when the Hull Jets make their only trip of the season to Solihull for a double points game. Hull, as ever, are an unpredictable side  capable of taking points from any squad in the league and with four points on offer it will be important to maintain momentum at the top of the league. Face-off : 6pm.

Barons goals : Bruce (3), Eaton (2), Janek, Henry, Ottosson
Barons assists : Ottosson (2), Doyle (2), Eley, Bruce, Janek, D Harrison, Henry, Eaton, Papps
