The Bristol Street Motors Solihull Barons had a big four point weekend to ensure they remain firmly at the top of the National Ice Hockey League's Laidler Division.
The Barons headed to Yorkshire on Saturday afternoon to take on the Bradford Bulldogs, a side returning to senior hockey this season after several years away. The Bulldogs have found the return tricky, picking up penalties rather than wins and so it was little surprise when the Barons emerged victorious, the margin in quality however was more than most would have thought. Highlights included a ten point night for Niklas Ottosson, while Joe Henry, Josh Bruce and Tom Soar all picked up seven points.
On Sunday the Barons played host to the well organised Sheffield Senators who, like the Barons, had started their season convincingly.
An entertaining first period saw the Barons with the bulk of the play but finding it difficult to find a way through the tight Sheffield defence. The Barons only reward for their efforts over the first twenty minutes was limited to a single goal; Tom Soar playing the puck behind the Sheffield goal to Niklas Ottosson on the right post to open the scoring.
The second period saw the close battle continue with the Barons slender lead more than once looking vulnerable. On the half hour mark Josh Bruce steadied Solihull nerves, picking up a pass from Joe Henry on the blue line before deking the Senators keeper for the Barons second goal of the night. A minute later the same pairing got goal number three, Bruce acting as provider as Henry roofed the shot into the Sheffield net. A rattled Senators side started to loose composure handing the Barons a long spell on the powerplay, however stout Sheffield defence ensured the score would remain at 3-0 heading into the final period.
The final period would see another three goals for the Barons. The first was thanks to a shot five minutes into the period by Perry Doyle stationed on the left hand point for goal number four.
On 53 minutes Joe Henry got his second goal of the evening, a shorthanded breakaway with the Solihull number seven deftly going round the Sheffield keeper to slot the puck cleanly into the back of the net.
Sheffield broke back five minutes from the end of the period, Cameron King getting the Senators only goal of the tie, scant reward for the hard working team's efforts over the sixty minutes.
The Barons however left their best effort for last. With only a minute left on the clock Niklas Ottosson waltzed the puck through the Senators defence before losing his footing and passing from prone on the ice to Eddie Eaton who calmly picked up Tom Soar in space, who in turn lofted the puck into the roof of the Sheffield net. |
The Barons now face consecutive home games over the next two weeks. In a fortnight they welcome the Hull Jets to Solihull but this Sunday they face the newly formed but quickly developing Telford NL Tigers in a West Midlands derby. Face-off : 6pm, Solihull Ice Rink.
