Sharp Sheffield Cut Barons Out of Points.

 By Gareth Thomson

Sunday saw the Sheldon Jewellery Centre Solihull Barons go down to defeat away against the National Ice Hockey League surprise package side the Sheffield Senators.

The first period saw the Barons with the bulk of the possession but could not convert this into pucks in the Sheffield net and after 20 minutes the two sides went into the dressing room scoreless. The first period and their progress in the season so far, showed that the Senators are a far cry from the team put out by Sheffield when the sides last met two years ago, a season which saw the Senators lose all bar one of their games.

The second period witnessed further Barons pressure from the start, however it was the Senators who broke the deadlock. With the Barons pushing forward, and against the run of play, Sheffield's Martin Gray picked out teammate Tom Humphries sitting behind the Barons defence to send him clear through to score on Hayden Laverick's goal.

The Barons upped the pressure further in the following minutes and this was rewarded as a Toni Scialdone pass in front of the Sheffield goal found Lui Brindle who tapped the puck into the Senators net.

The Sheffield side continued however to make the very most of their chances particularly when running their first lines, with these players combining twice in the final few minutes of the second to see the Barons go into the third two goals down.

Midway through the period, the good sized travelling support from Solihull felt a comeback may have been on the cards when Erik Bakalar appeared to score from close in on the Sheffield net. Controversially however, the referee in consultation with the line judge, waved the goal off leaving many of the Barons fans angry and confused.

As the Barons pushed forward in their attempt to get the goals needed to salvage a point from the game, the Sheffield side retained their composure with Nathan Britton scoring their fourth on the counter and their final goal of the night.

With a trip to the league basement side the Blackburn Eagles on Sunday evening, Barons coach Darren Bellerby will be aiming to ensure Solihull makes the most of the opportunity and use the experience to return to the crispness of execution seen at the start of the season.

The 11th of November will then see the Barons return to the Solihull ice when they have a chance to overturn Sunday's result as they welcome the Senators to Hobs Moat. As ever a big crowd is expected and appreciated so get yourself down for the best Sunday night out in town.
