Motor Nation Solihull Barons 12 : 0 Sheffield Senators
22nd September 2013
Josh Bruce managed a hat trick for the Barons while an off-form Mark Hartley had to get used to picking the puck from his net. The half-hour mark saw a bit of excitement round the Sheffield net involving Joe Henry, Josh Bruce and Mike Rodger. "Saint Joe" emerged without penalty from the stripeys - obviously nothing doing....
Rhys McWilliams has his ears checked.
While the focus was on the scoring, a shut-out by Josh Nicholls was equally satisfying.

Barons stun Senators

Motor Nation Solihull Barons : 12
Sheffield Senators : 0

By Gareth Thomson

The Motor Nation Solihull Barons got over the hi-cough of last weekend's defeat to the Nottingham Lions with a convincing steam-rollering of the Sheffield Senators at Hobs Moat Rink on Sunday evening.

The Senators had pushed the Barons hard last season but they were to suffer as a determined Solihull squad came out of the blocks quickly, Charlie Hammerton firing the puck into the Sheffield twine after only two minutes.

The Barons lead was doubled within another couple of minutes, Josh Bruce doing the honours, followed a minute later by Richard Slater capitalising on a rebound from an off-form Mark Hartley in the Sheffield net to give the Barons their third.

The Barons number one forward line of Richard Slater, Joe Henry and Josh Bruce continued to give the Senators defence nightmares, with Slater and Bruce both picking up their second goals of the evening by the middle of the first period.

Two more goals for the Barons rounded off the first period. Defenceman Phil Lee picked up number six and perhaps the sweetest of the evening saw a breakaway by Joe Henry down the left wing followed by a generous and crisp pass to Richard Slater to see the Barons take a convincing seven goal lead into the second period.

Some of the Barons momentum was lost early in the second as the Solihull squad spent the first half of the period a man down on the penalty kill, culminating in no little excitement as tempers flared around the Sheffield net around the half hour mark.

Back to full strength and the Barons continued to rack up the goals, Connor Hubbuck, Richard Slater and Rhys McWilliams all finding the net by the period end.

Hubbuck would get his second of the evening early in the third period, with Bruce rounding off a convincing win with the Barons twelfth and final goal.

A good win then for the Barons, against a somewhat off-form challenger. While the forward lines grabbed the glory, the defence and netminder Josh Nicholls clean sheet were equally positive.

The Barons have next weekend off, but return the following weekend, 6th October when the Nottingham Lions travel to the Solihull rink in what will be a big, big game for both sides. Make sure you are there and give the boys your support. Face-off 6pm.

Perry presents Charity Cheque

The Barons Perry Doyle presented Justine Cleary of Birmingham Childrens Hospital with a cheque for £1410 on Sunday evening. The money was raised through the preseason charity challenge and Perry's own adventure in the boxing ring.

Next Home Game

The Barons welcome the Nottingham Lions to Hobs Moat in what will be a major game for both sides.

For the Barons it will be the chance to get some revenge for their recent narrow loss in Nottingham.

The Lions however will be keen to show they can travel and still face stiff competition following a bad night in Coventry on Sunday.

A big crowd can be expected so make sure you are among them for the best Sunday night out in Solihull.

Make sure you make it to the rink to support the Barons.
