Barons Lay Down Law to Senators

Motor Nation Solihull Barons : 9
Sheffield Senators : 2

19th January 2014

With the Sheffield Senators having last weekend taken the scalp of high-flying Deeside Dragons the Barons knew any complacency in their ranks could easily be punished and went out from the start to ensure the two points on offer stayed at Hobs Moat.

Within two minutes of the puck hitting the ice Connor Hubbuck waltzed his way in front of the Sheffield keeper to open the scoring for Solihull. With the pressure all coming from Solihull, the Barons second came from defenceman Richard Crowe, not from one of his impressive slapshots but instead from a deft effort from close in. By ten minutes the Barons were three to the good, Josh Bruce knocking the puck under the keeper from a metre out.

Nathan Parkes-Britton, Senators top scorer, pegged the runaway Barons back a little on the tenth minute, making the most of a rebound on the powerplay to give the Senators their first goal of the night.

The Senators were again on the powerplay at the fifteen minute mark but found themselves overcommitted, allowing Ryan Selwood to exploit gaps on the blueline to give Joe Henry a short-handed breakaway and the Barons fourth goal of the evening.

The second period continued the Barons dominance. One minute in and the Barons were on a powerplay, Rich Slater converting this with a shot from the back post as he made the most of a Mike Rodger slapshot which had careered off the backboards before falling nicely for the Barons number 17. A further powerplay five minutes later gave the Barons their sixth goal, Perry Doyle flicking the puck into the Sheffield net from just outside the crease. The remainder of the period continued the Solihull dominance however a series of penalties limited their opportunities to further advance their scoring and the sides hit the dressing room 6-1 in favour of Solihull.

The Senators had obviously had a pep talk during the interval and came out positively in the third, Josh Wheway getting the Sheffield sides second and final goal of the evening. This was countered by Kieran Papps finding the net for the Barons number seven, a long range effort going past an unsighted Ben Churchfield, who had taken over Senators netminding duties from Mark Hartley. Mid-period the red mist descended as a trip on Rich Slater saw the Barons forward react angrily resulting in most of the remainder of the Barons line indulging in fisticuffs with their opposite numbers. This dealt with the remainder of the game saw the Barons add a couple more goals via Rich Slater and Connor Hubbuck to round things off 9-2 in favour of Solihull.

The Barons now have a long three week break before beginning the run in to the season end. Their next fixture is at home on the 9th of February against local rivals the Coventry Blaze. As with all "A45 Derbies" the game promises much with West Midlands bragging rights up for grabs. Add in the Barons need for points to stay ahead in the league coupled to Coventry's determination to avoid the wooden spoon among the big four Laidler clubs and it should not be a game to be missed.

Barons goals : R Slater (2), Hubbuck (2), Crowe, Henry, Doyle, Papps, Bruce
Barons assists : Henry (2), Janak (2), E Slater, Selwood, R Slater, Eley, Larkin, Papps, Bruce, Rodger, Hubbuck
Barons Man of the Match : Tomas Janak

Barons head coach, Darren Bellerby, was interviewed following Sunday's game. Hear what he had to say about the game, the fight and the prospect of Coventry's visit.
...and I know it wasn't 8-2 !

Next Home Game

The Barons welcome the Coventry NL Blaze to Hobs Moat for the second time this season. The A45 Derby will be as heated as ever and neither squad will be keen to walk away from the game with anything less than two points.

A big, big crowd is expected so make sure you get down to the rink and let your cheers tilt the Hobs Moat Ice in favour of your Barons.
