Barons steel defeats Sheffield's Senators

Bristol Street Motors Solihull Barons : 7
Sheffield Senators : 2

The Bristol Street Motors Solihull Barons continued their winning ways on Sunday evening with victory over the Sheffield Senators at the Solihull rink. In what was a top of the table clash, it was the Barons who were first to put the puck to the net, Josh Bruce exploiting a cluttered Senators goal mouth to put the puck behind the prone Sheffield netminder for goal number one just after five minutes. By the middle of the period a Joe Henry shot from the right hand circle gave the Barons a two goal cushion, while a mid-period hiatus saw play halted for ten minutes as a solution was found to a fault with the rink lighting.

Upon the restart it only took the Barons a minute to find the net once more, Rich Slater tapping in his own rebound from the Sheffield netminder's pads. Josh Bruce would wrap up the scoring for the first period collecting a rebound on the back post for his second and the Barons fourth goal of the night.

The Barons were quick to extend the scoring as the second period faced-off, Thomas Janak tapping the puck in from a matter of inches for goal number five. A few minutes later an apparent breakaway goal by Tom Soars was waved off, while just after the half hour Josh Bruce notched up his hat-trick - a shorthanded charge up the ice by Bruce and Henry saw the former juggle the puck into the Sheffield net from two feet out. Three minutes later and Andy Whitehouse lofted the puck into the top shelf of the Senators goal for Solihull's seventh. A Sheffield powerplay a minute later was made the most of by the Yorkshire side, Thomas Humphries with the finishing touch to get the Senators on the scoreboard. The Senators appeared to get a second wind from this and duly doubled their tally of a face-off in the Barons end in the last couple of minutes of the period, Callum Rawson putting the puck into the roof of the Barons net.

The final period began uneventfully, however the physicality of the play quickly ramped up. Josh Bruce for the Barons and the Senators Joel Aheran going toe to toe on the eighth minute while a minute later Daniel Harrison kept Sergevs Jegorovs honest after the former ran Sam Hewitt in the Barons net. A few minutes later and Solihull's Dave Rogers and Sheffield's Cameron King had their own disagreement. While all these distractions were going on the final period played out scoreless to leave the Barons the victors, 7 to 2.

The Barons are back on home ice this Sunday evening when they welcome the Bradford Bulldogs for their first visit to Hobs Moat in several years. Returnees to the league, the Bulldogs have struggled to get up to speed and are pointless at present but have made their mark in other ways averaging nearly 40 penalty minutes per game. Face-off : 6pm.
