Barons extend lead at Top of Table

Sheffield Senators : 2
Motor Nation Solihull Barons : 8
29th December 2013

On Sunday the Motor Nation Solihull Barons put down their Christmas presents for a few hours to head North to take on the Sheffield Senators. This was to be the Barons second visit to the Yorkshire side, having narrowly sneaked a win earlier in the season with the odd goal in nine. Add disrupted training schedules due to the holiday season and there was every possibility for an upset should the Barons be complacent.

The start of the first period showed that nothing could be taken for granted, home side assistant captain Michael Mawer, opening scoring on the third minute. By mid-period the Barons started to find their feet and when Sheffield’s Jamie Lewis was sent to the showers early for a high-sticking penalty, the Barons made the most of the resulting five minute powerplay to fire in two quick responses from Rich Slater and Jake Larkin. Joe Henry further extended the lead but Michael Mawer pegged this back in the final minute of the period to limit the Barons to a 3-2 lead as the teams headed to the dressing room.

The second period gave the Barons the chance to start to make things comfortable for themselves, Erik Bakalar and Ryan Selwood providing two more goals for no loss.

By the final twenty minutes it was all Solihull, with Mark Hartley in the Senators net facing 30 shots to the Baron Sam Hewitt’s two. A couple of goals for Josh Bruce and a single for Eddie Eaton wrapped things up for 2013 for the Barons.

A successful first half of the season for the Hobs Moat side who having built form, are now sitting pretty at the top of the Laidler Conference and will be keen to maintain form in the remaining 11 games of the season.

The Barons will be back on home ice on this Sunday, 5th January when the Blackburn Eagles make the trip down to Hobs Moat. Face-off 6pm.
