Barons back to winning ways

Motor Nation Solihull Barons : 13
Hull NL Stingrays : 2

By Gareth Thomson

After a couple of disappointing results for the Motor Nation Solihull Barons, the Hobs Moat side struck back in devastating style on Sunday evening as they laid waste to the Hull NL Stingrays.

The Barons went into the game hungry for the win but aware that Hull are the most unpredictable side in the conference. The Humbersiders have gone down to a number of heavy defeats but have also shown they can take points off of the likes of league champions the Nottingham Lions.

The Barons started the game strongly, pressurising the Hull net from the puck drop but in the eighth minute and against the run of play, it was a slick breakaway by Hull's Declan Pearson who fired home a blistering shot as he crossed the blue line to put the Stingrays into the lead.

Five minutes later and Rhys McWilliams brought things back level for the Barons thanks to a clear shot through traffic from the left hand point. Solihull captain Rob Eley then ensured the Barons would go into the first break with a little breathing room, with two goals in a little over 30 seconds, the first a sweet wraparound Hull's left post.

The second period saw the Barons forwards hitting their stride. Two minutes into the restart and Rich Slater scored possibly Solihull's best goal of the night, a beautiful break down the left wing finished with an unstoppable flying shot as he crossed the blue line.

Further goals followed for the Barons, a pair for Rich Slater bringing up his hat-trick, while
Jake Larkin would also find the Hull net twice and Josh Bruce the once during the second period.

While the Barons dominated the period, Hull had a couple of noteworthy chances with two clear breakaways on goal in the space of 20 seconds denied only by an alert Josh Nicholls in the Solihull net.

The final period allowed the Barons to continue to pad their stats totals. Rob Eley joined Rich Slater on a hat-trick, before Slater brought his tally up to four. Jordan Fisher for Hull pulled one back for the Stingrays on a powerplay. Connor Hubbuck gave the Barons their twelfth but it was left to Mikey Rodger to finish things off for the night with a dashing coast to coast solo effort which ended with a diving shot sending the puck, closely followed by Rodger himself cascading into the Hull net.

The Barons now have a rest weekend before heading to Sheffield to take on the Senators on the 3rd November. They return to their home rink for a high stakes battle with local rivals the Coventry Blaze on the 10th November. Face-off 6pm.

The Barons welcome the Coventry NL Blaze for the first time in the 2013-14 Laidler Conference season.

The two sides have already met in a closely fought game at Coventry's Skydome which went the Barons way when they scored the odd goal in nine in front of a large travelling support.

With the Laidler conference being incredibly closely fought, the tie will be a high stakes one for both sides and not to be missed by spectators.
