Barons loose out in North Wales battle
Deeside Dragons : 5
Motor Nation Solihull Barons : 4
By Gareth Thomson
For the second week in a row the Motor Nation Solihull Barons went down to a narrow, single goal, defeat against a Laidler Conference rival, this time coming away pointless from a trip to the Deeside Dragons.
The Flintshire side started brightly, James Parsons finding a way past Barons netminder, Sam Hewitt, before three minutes had passed. The two sides traded attacks for much of the remainder of the period and when a powerplay opportunity came the Barons way a few minutes before the period end, Perry Doyle took the chance to tip the puck in off an assist from Rich Slater. The Dragons responded quickly and within a minute Si Furnival restored Deeside's lead.

The second period continued with the to and fro as the physicality from both sides began to grow. Rich Slater brought things back level for the Barons just after the half hour but again the Dragons hit back as Deeside's impressive Swedish import Dan Soderberg-Andersson scored to make it 3-2. Again the Barons capitalised on a powerplay to level things up via a Rhys McWilliams effort, to leave everything to play for going into the the third period.
The final period was an edgy affair which saw the Barons take the lead for the first time, Joe Henry finding Ryan Selwood for Solihull's fourth goal of the evening. Sadly for the travelling support, the remaining ten minutes would see the Barons on the wrong end of converted powerplays as Deeside just edged the contest with goals from Shaun Kippin and Si Furnival.

The Barons welcome the Hull NL Stingrays to Hobs Moat for the first time in the 2013-14 Laidler Conference season.
Hull have shown themselves over the last couple of years to be the most unpredictable of sides having pushed the Nottingham Lions to a draw but also being roundly beaten by Deeside Dragons.
Which Stingrays side shows up is anyone's guess but the Barons willl need to be on top form to avoid any upsets.
Make sure you make it to the rink to support the Barons. |
