Deeside Dragons : 5
Bristol Street Motors Solihull Barons : 6
The Bristol Street Motors Solihull Barons continued to notch up the wins but on Sunday evening, a tense single goal victory over the Deeside Dragons gave the Hobs Moat side a mighty scare.
Deeside have traditionally been among the strongest sides in the division however this season has been one of trials, tribulations and inconsistent form and the Barons were quick to exploit the Welsh squad’s weaknesses. Within a minute of the puck being dropped Tom Soar scored the Barons opener and the lead was doubled thanks to an Andy Whitehouse effort on three and a half minutes. This was quickly countered – Stevie Fellows getting one back for the Dragons. By period end however the Barons had found the net twice more via Niklas Ottosson & Jake Larkin to give a comfortable 4-1 lead and things appeared to be very much business as usual for Solihull.
The second period however showed that the Dragons were in no mood for giving up and it was Deeside who would get the only goal of the period, Si Furnival finding the net in the first half of the period.
Five minutes into the final period and Deeside were very much in touching distance of the Barons, Bryn Jones cutting the Barons advantage to a single goal and putting Solihull’s winning streak under serious pressure.
The Barons however got their scoring heads back on to regain their three goal advantage with only seven minutes of the game to go – a pair from Joe Henry easing out the score.
The Dragons however would be allowed back into the game with Paul Davies and Mick Jones bringing things back to a single goal in favour of the Barons with only three minutes to go. With emotions and penalties running high it was a relieved Barons who held on for the win as the 60 minute buzzer rang out.
It will be Deeside’s turn to visit Solihull for the last time for the season and possibly the last time for a while, this Sunday. This will be the Barons penultimate league tie of the season and after such a competitive challenge by the Deesiders last weekend a good crowd is expected for what should be a great return tie. Face-off : 6pm.
Meanwhile the Barons are pleased to confirm the return of the Laidler Conference Playoffs to Solihull over the Easter weekend, with the semi-finals being played on the Saturday and Sunday and the final on the Monday (more info below). |
