Solihull Barons 0 : 3 Blackburn Hawks
26th February 2012
Neil Adams, Adz Andrews and the rest of the Barons managed a total of 45 shots on goal but were faced by an on-form Danny Brittle in the Hawks goal. At the other end of the rink, a stout Barons defence, here in the form of Phil Lee, Adz Andrews and netminder Sam Hewitt, ensured there would be no additions to the Hawks total in the 2nd half hour.
Luke Thomas tussled with the Hawk's Scott Glover late in the match.

Down but Certainly Not Out

Barons’ relegation from the ENL North One was confirmed after a battling defeat to title-chasing Blackburn Hawks.

Over the course of the season, the Whites have shown that they can compete against the best that Division One has to offer and it was true say again in a competent display against the Hawks, despite eventually losing out 3-0.

Top scorer Richard Slater was again missing through injury and it’s unlikely that he will return this season – and that lack of clinical edge in front of goal was once again the difference.

Solihull actually outshot Blackburn 45 to 29, but just couldn’t find a way past netminder Dan Brittle in what was their fourth shutout in the last six matches.

The game will best be remembered for the two fights that stirred both benches and the watching faithful. Neil Adams and Tom King scuffled midway through the first with Blackburn already 2-0 in front after two goals in the eighth minute from Jordan Bannon.

But Luke Thomas v Scott Glover was the main attraction, erupting into action in the third after a controversial call on Erik Bakalar for interference. David Meikle had already netted the Hawks third and final goal in the 28th minute when Thomas and Glover slalomed to centre ice and weighed one another up before launching an assault that neither wanted to end as prematurely as it did.

Barons’ next match is at home to Coventry ENL Blaze in the final chapter of the A45 derby. Last time out at HMR, last gasp goals from Tom Parker and Rich Slater secured a thrilling 7-5 victory in front of an 811 bumper crowd.

The Barons squad have promised similar fireworks this time out and urged anyone and everyone to attend to beat the previous attendance. Here’s to claiming back the bragging rights.
