Recap

Widnes Wild : 3
TC Cars Solihull Barons : 9

The TC Cars Solihull Barons moved to the top of the NIHL Midland Cup rankings with a convincing win over Laidler Champions the Widnes Wild on Sunday evening.

Ruskin Hughes comes under pressure from Thomas Jackson (J&K Davies)

It was a rather short benched Barons who rocked up at the Widnes Rink missing at least half a dozen key players including imports Niklas Ottosson and Tomas Janak. Despite this it was still a strong Solihull core who took to the ice and stunned the home side with two goals in the first minute and a half. The first by Adie Brittle just before the minute mark before Callum Bowley found the net himself. The home side steadied things a little and took their opportunity to draw back a goal in the dying seconds of a ninth minute powerplay, Ryan Kemp getting the final touch. By the end of the first twenty, the on-form Tom Soar had continued his scoring streak, finding the net off a feed from Brittle to push out the Solihull margin once more.

Andy Whitehouse looks to get the drop on Daniel Hay (J&K Davies)

The second period remained scoreless until near the period end when a Widnes penalty gave the Barons the power play and space they needed to create goal number 4, a final minute shot from Daniel Mulcahy.

If the second period showed a lull in scoring there was no such scarcity in the final twenty – or more precisely the final five minutes. With Tom Soar bagging his second of the night on the 45 minute mark a Ruskin Hughes solo effort with five minutes to go unleashed a flurry of scoring with the puck spending as much time in the net as on the ice. Matt Maurice and Daniel Mulcahy netted for the Barons while Berwyn Hughes and Jakub Hajak made the scoreline a bit more respectable for the home side.

The Barons are back at their own Hobs Moat rink on Sunday when they will take on the Nottingham Lions in another cup fixture – face-off 5:30pm.
