After a closer than expected but ultimately relatively comfortable win against Nottingham last weekend, the level of competition faced by the Direct Taxis Solihull Barons notches up a level once more on Sunday evening with the arrival of the Sheffield Scimitars.

The Scimitars name is one which goes back a long time in Sheffield, being used for the EPL and Division 1 side of the early 2000s and more recently for the under 20s squad. The Scimitars lining up on Sunday are however a largely new team formed for the cup tournaments of the otherwise barren 2020-21 season and now embarking on a full season of regular play.

Despite being a new team, the squad is almost certainly the most experienced in the league, pulling in seasoned players from the likes of the Sheffield Steeldogs and Senators, the Sutton Sting and Nottingham Lions. Players to keep an eye on include captain Warren Tait and some-time Baron Ruskin Hughes, while Thomas Hovell & James Hadfield are a strong net-minding pairing. The biggest threat to the Barons will perhaps however come from veteran imports Vladimir Luka and Stanislav Lascek who have each been good for a goal a game in a season which has seen the Scims comfortably cut down the Blackburn Hawks twice and run Moralee high flyers, the Solway Sharks close.

The Barons are themselves getting stronger with the rust starting to come off the skates while new signings such as James Smith and Ash Calvert have quickly started to make impact. Sunday’s game however is difficult to call and a quality tie is expected.
