Richard and Eddie made it a Slater household double when they picked up the top prizes at the club’s end of season presentation evening at Hobs Moat Road.

Richard fought off a number of strong contenders to claim the Supporter’s Player of the Year trophy, whilst brother Eddie was awarded with the Player’s Player of the Year accolade.

The news will come as no great surprise to many as top-scorer Richard and defensive stalwart Eddie continue their development as promising hockey stars.

Richard Slater's ability in front of goal saw him win the Supporters' Player of the Year.

“It’s a great privilege, it’s probably one of the most prestigious awards,” said Richard Slater immediately after the presentation.

“I feel really thankful to the fans as it proves that they hold me in high regard. There are a lot of great players in the team and there’s lot of players that the fans like, but to have all these people voting for me to be the top one is great.

“We’ve got a lot of experienced players and a lot of great young players coming through. You’ve got the outgoing Ayersy and the experienced Leapy who I hold in high regard, they are great players. The fans love them as they do of most players in this team, so to have me at the top is a great boost.”

Reflecting on the season, Richard admitted that he and the team took a while to find their feet at the dizzy heights of ENL One, but feels that everyone will have improved from the rollercoaster experience.

Reflecting on the season, Richard admitted that he and the team took a while to find their feet at the dizzy heights of ENL One, but feels that everyone will have improved from the rollercoaster experience.

“Coming in at the start of the season I thought that it was difficult to get started. I think I had to go about three games where I didn’t score a goal, but since then I’ve made an appearance in the EPL as well which really gave me a boost for the rest of the season for scoring goals.

“Daz said he wanted to give it ten games, but I thought it was always going to take until Christmas and we got those results around Christmas time but we couldn’t really push on from that and unlucky for us, the teams around us started getting good results which left us rooted to the bottom of the table.

“But I think everybody will be a better player because of it [the season]. You’ll always improve from playing difficult teams and you’ll always find positives and you’ll improve game on game because of the quality of the teams in the league.”

Eddie Slater has been a highly reliable defenceman for the Barons this year, earning him the Players' Player of the year award.

And there’s good news to come for Barons fans heading into the summer break - Richard has signalled his intent to commit to the Solihull cause for another season.

“I’ve spoken to Daz and I’ve said I want to be here. A few people have spoken to me with things but to be honest, this team is like a family and I just want to stay here and have a lot of fun and success with this team and just continue to improve.”
